Money matters
Currency & Costs
Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee ( Rs ) made up of 100 cents ( c ).
Rupees come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 (coins), and 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 (notes), while cents come in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 (coins). Take care to `break down’ very high value notes as soon as you can, and do not accept very dirty or torn notes, as they can be difficult to dispose of.
As far as costs are concerned, Sri Lanka, on the whole, is pretty economical; fairly decent accommodation and meals can cost as little as Rs 600 a day, and if you visit the country during the off-season, you can get some very good bargains on accommodation.
Banks & Money Changers
Two of the largest banks in Sri Lanka are The Bank of Ceylon and The People’s Bank, with branches in virtually every town. Other international commercial banks also have branches in the country, especially in large cities like Colombo and Kandy. Foreign currency and Traveller’s Cheques can be changed to Sri Lankan Rupees at the airport, or at some banks – including the Bank of Ceylon and the People’s Bank. It is advisable to avoid touts who hang around tourist spots offering good exchange rates, as these are invariably experts at the art of thievery.
Most major credit cards are widely accepted in Sri Lanka, and in some places can be used to make cash withdrawals from Bank of Ceylon branches. |
