Important Information for Drivers in
Austria
Driving in Austria
is uncomplicated and offers the greatest flexibility and freedom; you
explore at your own pace. Roads are well maintained, whether you select
a superhighway or a meandering byway. An international drivers
license is required and can easily be obtained from your local auto
club.
The good news is that car rental rates in Europe have actually decreased
over the last few years and many bargains are available. The major U.S.
rental companies are represented in Austria
as are a range of European firms. For travelers on Austrian Airlines,
the carrier offers a special car rental program with Budget Rent a Car.
In order to take advantage of the best deals, pre-book your car rental
arrangements with the help of your travel agent. Keep in mind that
gasoline costs in Europe are higher than in the U.S., therefore we
recommend the careful selection of a rental car that best suits your
needs and gets good mileage. Standard-shift, non-air-conditioned cars
are generally priced lower, so consider which amenities you can do
without.
Many credit cards offer free supplemental rental car insurance, which
might let you save on optional car insurance. Check with your credit
card company.
